Extraordinary African Safaris
Our top recommendation — a quiet, beautiful western approach with the best acclimatisation and highest summit success on Kilimanjaro.
Lemosho is widely considered the finest route up Kilimanjaro, and it’s the one we recommend most often. Starting on the remote, forested western side — where you may spot wildlife on day one — it crosses the stunning Shira Plateau before joining the Machame trail high on the mountain, combining solitude in the early days with the best scenery throughout.
Crucially, its 8-day itinerary gives the strongest acclimatisation of the popular routes, translating into the highest summit success. If you want the best balance of beauty, quiet, and reaching the top, Lemosho is it.
Remote rainforest to the Shira Plateau (possible wildlife).
Across the plateau, climbing high and sleeping low.
The Barranco Wall and traverse to base camp.
Midnight summit push to 5,895 m, then descend via Mweka.
If budget allows, choose Lemosho over Machame — the quieter start, superior scenery, and extra acclimatisation day give it the highest realistic summit odds of the popular routes. The only downsides are slightly higher cost and a longer drive to the trailhead, both well worth it.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Lemosho Route Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
