Extraordinary African Safaris
Kilimanjaro's only northern approach — a drier, gentler, quieter route from the Kenyan side, ideal in the rainy shoulder months.
Rongai is the only route to climb Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, and it has a special niche: the northern side sits in the mountain’s rain shadow, so it stays drier than the southern routes. That makes Rongai the best choice during the wetter shoulder months, and a reliably quiet alternative year-round.
The approach is gentle and the wilderness feel strong, with a chance of spotting wildlife in the lower forest. It descends via Marangu on the southeast, giving some scenic variety. The 7-day version offers the best acclimatisation and success.
Forest and moorland on the dry northern slopes.
Climb to Mawenzi Tarn, then across the saddle to Kibo.
Midnight push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
Down the southeastern route for scenic variety.
Rongai's trump card is dryness — if you must climb in the wetter months, it's the route to choose, and it's always quieter than the south. Acclimatisation is decent but not the best, so take the 7-day version. Scenery is good rather than spectacular until the summit day.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Rongai Route Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
