🏔 The Quiet North Side · From $1,950 per person

Rongai Route Trek

Kilimanjaro's only northern approach — a drier, gentler, quieter route from the Kenyan side, ideal in the rainy shoulder months.

Experience Guide

Rongai is the only route to climb Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, and it has a special niche: the northern side sits in the mountain’s rain shadow, so it stays drier than the southern routes. That makes Rongai the best choice during the wetter shoulder months, and a reliably quiet alternative year-round.

The approach is gentle and the wilderness feel strong, with a chance of spotting wildlife in the lower forest. It descends via Marangu on the southeast, giving some scenic variety. The 7-day version offers the best acclimatisation and success.

How It Unfolds

Day 1–2
Rongai Gate → Kikelelwa

Forest and moorland on the dry northern slopes.

Day 3–4
→ Mawenzi → Kibo

Climb to Mawenzi Tarn, then across the saddle to Kibo.

Day 5
Summit & descend

Midnight push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

Day 6
Descend via Marangu

Down the southeastern route for scenic variety.

Is It Worth It?

Rongai's trump card is dryness — if you must climb in the wetter months, it's the route to choose, and it's always quieter than the south. Acclimatisation is decent but not the best, so take the 7-day version. Scenery is good rather than spectacular until the summit day.

Good to Know

  • Driest route — best in shoulder/rainy months
  • Take 7 days for better acclimatisation
  • Quiet and wild
  • Descends via Marangu for variety

+
It's the only northern route and the driest, sitting in the mountain's rain shadow — the best choice for the wetter shoulder months and always quieter than the south.

Via the Marangu route on the southeast, giving some scenic variety on the way down.
