Extraordinary African Safaris
A western route that drives high to begin on the Shira Plateau — scenic and quiet, but with a demanding high start best for acclimatised climbers.
The Shira route is the older sibling of Lemosho, following nearly the same line across the beautiful Shira Plateau — but instead of walking up through the forest, it drives you to a high trailhead at around 3,500 metres to begin. That saves a day but starts you high, which can hamper acclimatisation if you’ve not prepared.
It’s scenic and quiet, sharing Lemosho’s plateau views and upper trail. For climbers already acclimatised — or combining it with prior high time — it’s a fine option, but Lemosho’s gentler forest start is generally the better choice for the same line.
Vehicle to ~3,500 m; short walk to Shira Camp.
Climb high, sleep low toward Barranco.
The Barranco Wall and traverse to base camp.
Midnight push to 5,895 m, then descend via Mweka.
Shira and Lemosho share the same gorgeous line; the difference is the start. Shira's high driving start saves time but risks acclimatisation for the unprepared — so we usually steer first-timers to Lemosho's forest walk-up instead. Shira suits those already acclimatised or short on days.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Shira Route Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
