Northern Serengeti River Crossing Safari

The migration's most dramatic moment — wildebeest hurling themselves across the crocodile-filled Mara River, July to October.

Experience Guide

The Mara River crossings are the scene every wildlife film chases: thousands of wildebeest massing on the bank, the tension building for hours, then a sudden surge as the herd plunges into the current past waiting crocodiles. It happens in the northern Serengeti between roughly July and October, when the herds move between Tanzania and Kenya.

Witnessing one is part planning, part patience, part luck. We base you at camps within striking distance of the known crossing points and your guide tracks the herds daily, holding position at the river as the pressure builds. When it breaks, there is nothing like it.

How It Unfolds

Early
To the river

Position at a likely crossing point before the day heats up.

Wait
Build-up

Herds gather and hesitate on the bank — tension for hours.

Crossing
The plunge

When it breaks, the herd surges across past the crocodiles.

After
Quiet north

Game-drive the wilder, emptier northern Serengeti.

Is It Worth It?

Be clear-eyed: crossings can never be guaranteed and you may wait a full day for one — or several. The way to stack the odds is to travel July–October, stay at least two to three nights near the Mara River, and accept that nature sets the schedule. When it happens, it's the most thrilling sight in African wildlife.

Good to Know

  • Season is July–October only
  • Stay 2–3 nights near the river
  • Crossings can never be guaranteed
  • The northern Serengeti is wilder and quieter

Before You Book

When can I see a river crossing?
+
Roughly July to October, when the herds move through the northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River. Exact timing shifts yearly with the rains.
Can you guarantee I'll see one?
+
No — no ethical operator can. Travelling in season and staying two to three nights near the river gives the best realistic chance.
How long might I wait?
+
Crossings are unpredictable — sometimes within hours, sometimes after a full day of waiting. Patience is essential.
Is the northern Serengeti worth it outside crossing season?
+
Yes — it's wilder and far less crowded, with resident game year-round, but the crossings themselves are seasonal.
